Must Have Monta

Rumors have been circulating that a straight-up trade will send Andre Iguodala to the Golden State Warriors and bring Monta Ellis to Philadelphia. Since Allen Iverson left the South Philly hardwood some years ago now, the struggling Sixers have lacked the major component that every successful NBA team holds; a pure scorer. If the team can land Monta Ellis (who has averaged 20 points throughout his young career and around 25 in the past two seasons) they will insert a piece to a puzzle that has seen all too many "rebuilding" seasons. I have been a faithful Sixers fan ever since Allen Iverson lifted the team to a Finals birth in my first season as a fan, the pinnacle of my fan hood in 2001. I have no intentions of breaking the allegiance to my favorite basketball team in the near future, but if I have to watch Andre Iguodala heave up last second prayers with a defender who he is incapable of shaking off breathing down his neck, for a whole another season, I may take my love for the game somewhere else. Give me Monta Ellis; please give the faithful a scorer.

Who Are These Guys?

I went to check out how the Phillies were doing in the MLB standings in terms of best record in the league, and something caught my eye. As I scrolled down the page I see Tampa Bay, Cleveland, and Los Angeles leading the three AL divisions, three teams who nobody predicted to be this good. How in the world are the Rays atop the powerhouse AL East? Just ask opposing hitters, because the Rays staff has posted a whopping 3.38 ERA, good enough for 6th in the MLB. Their first 4 starters are absolutely dominating the league, posting a 3.13 ERA. The pitching was supposed to be their strong point, but it's their hitting which has been a bigger surprise. With the losses of Carl Crawford, Carlos Pena, and Jason Bartlett, the Rays were looking at a tough season at the plate; but Matt Joyce and Ben Zobrist have carried the team into an AL East lead. The Rays are a nice surprise to contend with the Yanks and Red Sox, but the Cleveland Indians have undeniably stolen their glory. Picked to be a bottom 3 team in the league by most people, the Indians have shocked the league by owning the best record. This team which has no superstar, heck, no player who has been near the best at their position in recent years, has found a balanced attack, where 7 of their starters have at least 15 RBI's. Along with the hitting, the pitching staff has stunned everybody. Josh Tomlin and Justin Masterson are leading the starters along with a shut-down bullpen to a 3.49 ERA. What the Indians have done so far can't just be described as "unexpected"", it's much much more than that. The third AL leading team is the LA Angels and they seem to be following the division-leading trend of having filthy pitching. Jered Weaver and Dan Haren are leading a fantastic staff posting a 3.33 ERA which had kept them in every game. Although they aren't as surprising as the other two, the Angels were picked third by most people behind the A's and Rangers, so this is a bti of a shocker so far. It will be interesting to see if these hot starts by surprising teams will hold, with powerhouses Boston, Detroit, and Texas all starting to catch fire right behind them.

Roses Aren't Red, They're GOLD!!

If there were any doubters of Derrick Rose being the MVP, there isn't anymore, at least there shouldn't be. Rose has displayed an extremely dynamic game, hitting a three in 11 of 12 games, making mid-range jumper after mid-range jumper, getting to the rack at will with his explosive quickness, and making 83% of his freethrows. Rose's game can't fully be described by his sensational numbers, but they show his dominance pretty well. He has demonstrated the ability to score at will, whenever his team needs him to, but also distribute the ball and get others involved, posting 10 assists in 6 of the games. For those Lebron and Wade fans, I give you this, the Bulls took game 1 by 20 points, beating the Heat for the 4th time this year. Lebron and Wade combined for 33 while Rose had 28 alone. There's 3 superstars in Miami, while there's only one in Chicago, and two if you count Boozer. Rose controls the entire Bulls offense, while Lebron and Wade can split the time up and even Bosh can bail them out sometimes. It's clear that Rose is much more valuable to his team than any other player in this league, and if you still don't believe me wait until June when he's got a trophy high above his head.

Is This a DJOK?

What's the biggest achievement in sports in 2011 so far? No, it's not Aaron Rodgers leading the Packers to the Super Bowl. No, it's not Derrick Rose's dominance over the NBA. No, it's not Lionel Messi's goal scoring ability in Barcelona's amazing season. This title outright goes to Serbian tennis star, Novak Djokovic, who has started 2011 with an incredible 37-0 record. He started the year with 6,240 points in the ranking system, ranked third behind Roger Federer and well behind Rafael Nadal. Now, 37 wins later, he has well over 11,000 points, well ahead of Federer, and a good finish in the French Open away from a number 1 ranking. It's been an absolute dream run for Novak, in which he's won the Australian Open, along with the big Sony Ericsson Open, and BNP Paribas Open. In that run he's defeated Nadal 3 times, Federer 3 times, and Andy Murray twice. This run is as brilliant as Nadal's clay court dominance, and is Federer-esque a few years back. If he continues this play into the French, he could have his first title there, and a number 1 ranking
